About this tip calculator
The tip calculator multiplies your bill by the tip percentage to get the gratuity, adds it to the bill for the total, and divides that total by the number of diners to get each person's share. The math is the classic two-step gratuity formula: tip = bill × (tipPercent ÷ 100), then total = bill + tip, then per-person = total ÷ people. The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's plain-language guidance on tipping uses the same multiplication-then-division steps (consumerfinance.gov), and every restaurant POS receipt shows the same breakdown.
For example, on an USD 84.50 bill with a 20% tip split between 3 friends: tip = 84.50 × 0.20 = USD 16.90, total = 84.50 + 16.90 = USD 101.40, per-person = 101.40 ÷ 3 ≈ USD 33.80. The calculator does the rounding for you and shows each line so you can sanity-check the receipt before paying. Currency is a label only — there is no exchange-rate conversion — so pick the currency on your receipt to keep the figures consistent. FAQ
- How is the tip calculated?
- Tip = bill × tip percentage ÷ 100. The total = bill + tip, and per-person = total ÷ number of people. You can change the tip percentage, the bill, and the headcount independently.
- Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
- Custom varies. In the U.S. it is common to tip on the pre-tax subtotal; in many other places people tip on the full bill. This calculator simply multiplies whatever bill amount you enter — put in the figure you want tipped against.
- What is a normal tip percentage?
- In U.S. table-service restaurants 15–20% is typical; counter service is often 10% or a flat amount; in many European countries a small round-up is enough. Use the preset buttons or type a custom percent.
- Does the calculator handle currency conversion?
- No. The currency selector is just a label so the result reads naturally — there is no exchange-rate lookup. Enter the bill in whichever currency your receipt is in.
- Can I split the bill unevenly?
- This calculator splits the total evenly. For an uneven split, calculate the total here and divide it manually, or run the calculator once per sub-bill.
- Is anything sent to a server?
- No. All the math runs in your browser. The bill, tip percentage, and headcount never leave your device.
