About this pet food calculator

The pet food calculator estimates how many calories and cups of dry food your dog or cat needs each day based on their weight, life stage, and activity level. The result also breaks the daily amount into a morning and evening portion to make feeding time straightforward.

The tool uses the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula — RER (kcal/day) = 30 × body weight (kg) + 70 — as its starting point, which is the same baseline used in many veterinary nutrition guidelines. That baseline is then scaled by a life-stage multiplier (2× for puppies and kittens, 1× for adults, 0.8× for seniors) and an activity multiplier (0.8× for low activity, 1× for normal, 1.2× for high activity). Dividing the resulting daily calorie total by the calories-per-cup value you enter from your food bag gives the recommended cup amount. This is an estimate for general information and is not a substitute for advice from a qualified clinician. Consult your veterinarian before changing your pet's diet.

As a worked example, a normal-activity adult dog weighing 10 kg with food rated at 350 kcal per cup: RER = (30 × 10) + 70 = 370 kcal; with adult and normal multipliers both at 1×, the daily target stays 370 kcal, giving roughly 1.06 cups per day — about 0.53 cups in the morning and 0.53 cups in the evening. Pet owners, breeders, and shelter staff who want a quick daily feeding baseline will find this tool useful.

FAQ

What does the pet food calculator estimate?
It estimates your pet's daily calorie requirement and converts that into cups of dry food based on the calorie density you enter from the food bag label. Results include a suggested morning and evening split.
What formula does the calculator use?
It starts from the Resting Energy Requirement formula — RER = 30 × weight (kg) + 70 kcal/day — then multiplies by a life-stage factor (2× puppy/kitten, 1× adult, 0.8× senior) and an activity factor (0.8× low, 1× normal, 1.2× high). The total is divided by your food's kcal-per-cup value to get the cup amount.
How accurate is this estimate?
It provides a reasonable starting point based on standard veterinary energy formulas, but individual pets vary. Body condition, breed, health status, and food digestibility all affect actual needs. Always confirm portion sizes with your veterinarian.
What happens if I enter a calories-per-cup value outside 200–800?
The tool shows an error and will not calculate. Check your food bag label for the exact calorie density; most dry pet foods fall between 300 and 500 kcal per cup.
Does the pet food calculator store my pet's data?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. Closing or refreshing the page clears all inputs.
Is the pet food calculator free?
Yes, it is completely free to use with no account or signup required.
