About this holiday gift tracker
The holiday gift tracker helps you plan and monitor gift spending across every recipient in one place. Enter a total budget, add rows for each person, and assign each gift an estimated cost and a status — Idea, Purchased, Wrapped, or Given — then press Summarize to see a full breakdown.
The tool separates "Total estimated" from "Total spent". Total estimated includes every gift regardless of status, so you can see your worst-case outlay. Total spent counts only gifts with a status of Purchased, Wrapped, or Given — gifts still at the Idea stage are deliberately excluded because you have not yet committed to that cost. Remaining budget equals your total budget minus total spent, and the percentage bar turns yellow above 80% and red above 100%.
For example, set a budget of $500 and add four recipients: Mum (scarf, $45, Purchased), Dad (book, $25, Idea), Sister (necklace, $80, Wrapped), and Brother (game, $60, Given). Total estimated is $210 (45 + 25 + 80 + 60), but total spent is $185 (45 + 80 + 60 — Dad's $25 is excluded as an Idea). Remaining budget shows $315 and budget used reads 37%. The status breakdown counts 1 Idea, 1 Purchased, 1 Wrapped, and 1 Given.
All data is saved in your browser's localStorage so it survives a page reload; nothing is sent to a server. The tracker works for any gift-giving occasion — Christmas, Hanukkah, birthdays, or any seasonal event.
FAQ
- What is a holiday gift tracker and how does it calculate spending?
- A holiday gift tracker is a planning tool that lists each recipient alongside a gift idea, estimated cost, and status. Spending (total spent) is the sum of costs for gifts marked Purchased, Wrapped, or Given; gifts still at the Idea stage are not counted.
- Why are "Idea" costs excluded from total spent?
- Only committed gifts count toward your spending. A gift at the Idea stage has not been bought yet, so including its cost would misrepresent how much you have actually spent. Once you change the status to Purchased, Wrapped, or Given, the cost moves into total spent.
- Can I track multiple gifts per recipient?
- Yes. Add a separate row for each gift and use the same name in the Recipient column. Each row has its own cost and status, so the summary will list and total them individually.
- Does the holiday gift tracker work for occasions other than Christmas?
- Yes. The tool is generic and has no fixed holiday. Use it for Christmas, Hanukkah, Eid, birthdays, weddings, or any event where you want to manage gift budgets across multiple people.
- Where is my data stored — is it private?
- All data is stored only in your browser's localStorage on your device. Nothing is sent to a server. Clearing site data, switching browsers, or using private/incognito mode will erase it.
- Is the holiday gift tracker free to use?
- Yes, it is completely free with no account or signup required.
